Production and Decay of the Ge(1/2) Metastable State in a Low-Background Germanium Detector
نویسنده
چکیده
The Ge(1/2) metastable states decay with a very characteristic signature which allow them to be tagged event-by-event. Studies were performed using data taken with a high-purity germanium detector in a low-background laboratory near a nuclear power reactor core where ν̄e-flux was 6.4× 10 12 cms. The measured average and equilibrium production rates of Ge(1/2) were (8.7± 0.4) and (6.7± 0.3) kgday, respectively. The production channels were studied and identified. By studying the difference in the production of Ge(1/2) between the reactor ON and OFF spectra, the limiting sensitivities at the range of ∼ 10 − 10 cm for the cross-sections of neutrino-induced nuclear transitions were derived. The dominant background are due to β-decays of cosmic-ray induced Ga. The prospects of enhancing the sensitivities at underground locations are discussed. PACS numbers: 14.60.Lm, 13.15.+g, 5.30.Pt.

LArGe: Background suppression using liquid argon (LAr) scintillation for 0νββ decay search with enriched germanium (Ge) detectors
Measurements with a bare p-type high purity germanium diode (HPGe) submerged in a 19 kg liquid argon (LAr) scintillation detector at MPIK-Heidelberg are reported. The liquid argon–germanium system (LArGe) is operated as a 4π anti-Compton spectrometer to suppress backgrounds in the HPGe. This R&D is carried out in the framework of the Gerda experiment which searches for 0νββ decays with HPGe det...
متن کاملCosmogenic activation of Germanium and its reduction for low background experiments
Production of Co and Ge from stable isotopes of Germanium by nuclear active component of cosmic rays is a principal background source for a new generation of Ge double beta decay experiments like GERDA and Majorana. The biggest amount of cosmogenic activity is expected to be produced during transportation of either enriched material or already grown crystal. In this letter properties and feasib...
متن کاملTest of pulse shape analysis using single Compton scattering events
Compton scattering is one of the dominant interaction processes in germanium for photons with an energy of around two MeV. If a photon scatters only once inside a germanium detector, the resulting event contains only one electron which normally deposits its energy within a mm range. Such events are similar to Ge neutrinoless double beta-decay (0νββ) events with just two electrons in the final s...

The progress in the development of the new international Gerda (GErmanium Detector Array) experiment is presented. Main purpose of the experiment is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge. The experimental set up is under construction in the underground laboratory of LNGS. Gerda will operate with bare germanium semiconductor detectors (enriched in Ge) situated in liquid argon. I...

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN, searches for 0νββ of Ge. Germanium diodes enriched to ∼ 86 % in the double beta emitter Ge(Ge) are exposed being both source and detectors of 0νββ decay. Neutrinoless double beta decay is considered a powerful probe to address still open issues in the neutrino sector of the (beyon...
